Search ranked pages. AI assistants write an answer and decide which brands appear in it. What carries over from SEO, and what doesn't.
Generative Engine Optimization is often described as “SEO for AI”. That framing gets the tools right and the goal wrong. The work overlaps; what counts as winning does not.
The unit changes: from a ranked page to a written answer
In classic search the result is a list of links, and success is a position on it. In an AI answer the result is prose. The engine decides which brands to name, in what order and with what caveats — and the buyer may never click through at all.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| The result | A ranked list of pages | A written answer that names brands |
| Winning | Position and clicks | Being recommended in the answer |
| Surfaces that matter | Your pages | Your pages and the third-party pages engines cite |
| Stability | Rankings move gradually | Answers vary from one run to the next |
| Measurement | Rank tracking for keywords | Repeated probes of buyer questions |
What carries over from SEO
- Crawlable, server-rendered pages. Search-role AI crawlers fetch HTML and do not execute JavaScript.
- Clear structure. Direct answers, question-shaped headings and tables help engines of both kinds.
- Authority. Being referenced by credible third-party sources still decides who gets trusted.
What doesn't
- Keywords become questions. Buyers ask whole shortlist and comparison questions, with their context attached.
- Other people's pages weigh more. Assistants often cite review sites, forums and publications rather than the brands themselves.
- One check is not a measurement. The same question asked twice can produce two different answers.
- Tone is part of the result. Being named with a warning is not the same as ranking.
How to measure GEO
Track the questions buyers ask, across the engines they use, drawn more than once, and scored on whether you were recommended — not merely named. Report a change only when it clears the confidence interval. Why one answer is not a result covers the statistics.
Do you need both?
Yes. SEO keeps your pages discoverable and authoritative; GEO decides how assistants use them. Many teams keep their SEO suite for search data and add a platform built for AI answers. See how the platforms compare.
