SEO → Keywords

  1. Press Add a keyword and type the search as a person would type it.

  2. Optionally give a Target URL — the page that should rank. If you do, only that page counts as you; if you don’t, any page on your domain does.

  3. Under Checked on, choose Desktop search or Mobile search. The two results pages differ, and each is its own keyword with its own checks.

  4. Save. Its first position appears after the next scheduled check, or press Check now to run one straight away.

What to work on next

Above the table, every keyword is scored 0–100 — search demand, how attainable it is, fit to your business, where you rank now, and how commercial the search is — with what to do about it: create a page, or optimize the one that already ranks. Keywords already in the top 3, and searches for your own brand, are not recommended. Get the brief costs no credit and opens the brief under Fixes, where it stays listed; reading Google’s results page for it uses one research lookup.

Research keywords

Research keywords takes a Topic to research and returns related searches with Searches/mo, Difficulty (how hard the term is to rank for, 0–100) and CPC (what advertisers pay per click — a proxy for how commercial the term is). Press Track on the ones you want. Each search spends one research lookup from the month’s allowance. For phrases, related searches, questions, trends, intent and whole topics, use Research.

Rank a keyword from other places

A keyword is checked from your market. The pin icon on a tracked keyword adds other places to check it from — a city, a region, or another country (type its two-letter code), on desktop or mobile — and lists them with their latest position, which also shows under the keyword’s name. A place abroad is searched in its own country’s language. Each place is one more rank check every cycle, from the month’s checks; your plan sets how many places a keyword can have, your market counting as one. Position and everything else on SEO stay your market’s.

Opportunities from Search Console

Queries where Google already shows you on page two — positions 11 to 20 — are added here automatically once Search Console is connected. They are the cheapest wins in SEO: a page that is nearly there needs less than a page that is nowhere. They count towards the keyword allowance, up to half of it, so there is always room for the keywords you choose; past that they are listed but not checked.

`Check rankings now` spends checks. It runs a rank check for every tracked keyword straight away, each one drawn from the month’s allowance, and can run once a day. Your plan’s scheduled checks run on their own, with or without Search Console. A check that could not be completed — Google was slow to answer — is dropped and not charged.

Stop tracking, or delete

The eye icon on a tracked keyword stops tracking it: no more rank checks, and its slot in the allowance comes back. The keyword keeps its history and its recommendation, and sits under Not tracked with a Track button to start again. The bin icon deletes a keyword with its history, after asking. Not tracked also lists research ideas and Search Console queries past the allowance.
